Преподобният се родил в Италия от богати родители, които вярвали в Христа и водели благочестив живот. Те обичали сина си и го запознали с всички полезни и боговдъхновени книги. Преподобният толкова преуспял в изучаването на Свещеното Писание, че след кончината на родителите си събрал богатството, което му били оставили (около 1633 литри злато), събрал бедни, сирачета и вдовици и за един ден им раздал всичко.
