Син на деспот Георги и Ирина. Със сестра си Мара живял известно време в двореца на султан Мурад II. Ослепен в Одрин с брат си Григорий. Приел деспотска власт над Сърбия през 1458 г. Скоро след това трябвало да избяга от страната си в Албания, където се оженил за Ангелина, дъщерята на Скендербег. Сляп и нещастен, но винаги предаден на Бог, той се упокоил през 1468 г. в Италия. Мощите му почиват в манастира Крушедол, чийто ктитор е неговият син св. Максим.
