Единадесети епископ на Александрия след св. евангелист и апостол Марк. Управлявал дълго и мъдро паството си от 189 до 231 год. В негово време по искане на индийците, в Индия бил изпратен да проповядва Евангелието св. Пантен, управител на известната катехизическа школа в Александрия. Пантен в Индия намерил Евангелие, писано от св. апостол Матей на еврейски език.
