Његово крштено име је Симеон. Постао је јенопољски протопоп. Крајем 1656. године изабран је за митрополита ердељског са седиштем у Ђули. Замонашио се и добио монашко име Сава. Са писмом пољског краља Јована Казимира одлази код руског цара Алексеја, који га прими 31. маја 1668. године. Неколико дана касније 3. јуна поднео је званичну представку руском двору у којој износи политичке прилике у источној Европи и исказује жељу српског народа за чвршће везивање за православну Русију. У то време у Москви су боравили патријарси антиохијски и александријски, који су на позив руског цара дошли да разреше сукоб између цара Алексеја и патријарха Никона.
