Рођен у Будимљанској жупи од родитеља богобојажљивих. Као младић замонашио се у Зети, па је прешао на виши подвиг у Хиландар. Временом постане игуманом хиландарским. И као игуман буде изабран за епископа зетског, а после извесног времена и за архиепископа српског. Био је муж високо добродетељан и управљао је стадом Христовим с ревношћу и љубављу. Упокојио се мирно 1279. године у старости, узвикнувши пред смрт: „У руке твоје господе предајем дух мој”. Мошти му почивају под спудом у храму Пећке патријаршије.
