Ο Όσιος Θεόφιλος έζησε στα χρόνια που αυτοκράτορας ήταν ο Λέων ο Ίσαυρος, ο εικονομάχος. Ο όσιος, περιερχόμενος την Κωνσταντινούπολη, θέρμαινε την καρτεροψυχία των ορθοδόξων, και ήλεγχε την πλάνη των διωκτών των εικόνων. Η αρετή και η δύναμη του λόγου του, ανέδειξαν τον Θεόφιλο ένα από τους ισχυρότερους προμάχους της ευσέβειας. Κατόπιν τον φυλάκισαν και στη συνέχεια τον εξόρισαν. Έτσι, εκεί στην εξορία τελείωσε τη ζωή του, χωρίς να δεχτεί την πρόσκαιρη ελευθερία αντί προδοσίας της αλήθειας και απωλείας της αιωνίου ζωής.
