Der heilige Apolinarios war Jünger des hl. Apostels Peter, und wurde von ihm zum Bischof von Ravenna eingesetzt. Er war ein eifriger Verkünder des Evangeliums. Nach 28-jährigem Amte wurde er von Heiden mit dem Schwerte zerhauen. Das geschah im Jahre 75.
