Mit seinem ererbten Vermögen half er dort den verfolgten Christen, besonders den um ihres Glaubens willen Gefangenen. Nach dem Tod des Onkels wurde Pankratius von einem der Verfolgungsbefehl Kaiser Diokletians erfasst und vor den Kaiser gebracht. Der 14-Jährige ließ sich trotz aller Verlockungen nicht vom Glauben abbringen, deshalb wurde er öffentlich enthauptet, sein Leichnam Hunden zum Fraß vorgeworfen. Eine Christin barg ihn unter Lebensgefahr und setzte ihn in den Katakomben an der Via Aurelia bei.
