El a fost din cetatea Cyrului, care se afla în Siria. El a fost vestit prin marea familie din care se trăgea precum şi prin neasemănata lui frumuseţe fizică. Dar el a lepădat toate pentru dragostea lui Hristos şi s-a retras în pustia din Halkis ca să trăiască ca un zăvorit. El a fost contemporanul marelui Patriarh Flavian al Antiohiei, şi al împăraţilor Constanţiu şi Valens.
