Οι Άγιοι Ιούστος, Ιουστίνος, Χαρίτων, Χαρίτω η παρθένος, Ευέλπιστος, Ιέραξ, Παίων και Λιβεριανός (κατ' άλλους Βαλλεριανός) έλαβαν τα μαρτυρικά στεφάνια, μαζί με τον φιλόσοφο και απολογητή Ιουστίνο, στο διωγμό κατά των χριστιανών επί Μάρκου Αυρηλίου. Ανήκαν στην ανδρεία φάλαγγα των χριστιανών της Ρώμης, όπου μόνο το γνήσιο χριστιανικό θάρρος, μπορούσε να μη πτοείται από τη δύναμη της ειδωλολατρίας, που υποστηριζόταν από τα ανάκτορα και το στρατό. Αφού λοιπόν επανειλημμένα ομολόγησαν το Χριστό, καταδικάστηκαν να πεθάνουν με αποκεφαλισμό. Όλοι υπέστησαν το μαρτύριο αυτό ατάραχοι και χαρούμενοι, με την πεποίθηση ότι τους περίμεναν τα αθάνατα ουράνια αγαθά, που δίνονται από τον ουράνιο Πατέρα, σ' όλους όσους έζησαν με πίστη και αγάπη στη γη.
